Published: Mar 21, 2023 by Priya Maha

    Jump to Recipe

This mascarpone whipped cream frosting recipe makes a wonderfully light, creamy, and rich textured frosting that literally takes desserts to the next level.

As the name suggests, whipped cream and mascarpone cheese form the base of this frosting. Unlike the regular whipped cream, the addition of mascarpone cheese to whipped cream in this recipe stabilizes the cream making it fluffier and able to hold its shape better and longer and is therefore makes a more stable frosting.

    What is Mascarpone Cheese?

Mascarpone cheese is a soft, creamy cheese that originates from Italy (hence also known as Italian cream cheese). It has a texture that is similar to regular cream cheese, but it's much smoother and lighter. Made from cream, this cheese has a higher fat content compared to the standard American cream cheese and therefore a creamier texture.

Mascarpone has a delicate, slightly sweet flavor with a hint of tanginess that makes it a versatile ingredient in both sweet and savory dishes.

It's commonly used in desserts like tiramisu, cheesecake, and frosting, but it can also be used in savory dishes like pasta sauces and risottos. The rich and creamy texture of mascarpone makes it an ideal ingredient for adding depth and complexity to a wide variety of dishes including this mascarpone whipped cream frosting.

    How to Make

    Ingredients

    • Mascarpone cheese
    • Heavy whipping cream
    • Powdered sugar (Icing sugar)
    • Vanilla Extract

    Making the frosting

As with making regular whipped cream with heavy cream, the most important factor to remember is to make sure the cream is thoroughly chilled.

Room temperature will not work for this frosting. For best results, keep the bowl and the beaters (or whisk attachment if using) in the fridge for about 30 minutes before making this mascarpone whipped cream frosting.

Also make sure the mascarpone is kept chilled until it is ready to be creamed.

    1. To begin with, add the mascarpone cheese into a large bowl.
    2. Sift in the icing sugar. Cream until it is smooth with an electric mixer (stand mixer with a whisk attachment or hand mixer with cake beaters). Scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl.
    3. Add the vanilla extract and beat again briefly until the extract is well incorporate.
    4. Next, measure in the whipped cream.
    5. Beat it on high speed until the frosting increases in volume and stiff soft peaks form. At this stage, you will notice that the mascarpone cream is all smooth and fluffy and holds it shape well.
    6. The frosting is ready to be used and is best used immediately. If you wish to use it for piping, fill it into a piping bag. If you wish to use it as a filling or frosting for a cake, you can use a spatula or palette knife to apply it onto your cakes.

    Notes

Keep the cream and mascarpone cheese completely chilled

    • This is an important point to keep in mind not only when making this mascarpone whipped cream frosting recipe, but also generally when whipping cream is whipped.
    • Chilled cream will whip faster and be more stable. To help the cream retain its cold temperature while whipping, it also helps if the bowl and the beaters are cold too. For this purpose, it is advisable to keep the mixing bowl and the beaters in the fridge for at least 30 minutes before using.
    • If the cream and the bowl are not cold, the fat in the cream can begin to break down and soften. This will result in a less stable whipped cream that is prone to deflating or separating. By keeping the cream and the bowl chilled, you can ensure that your whipped cream is light, fluffy, and holds its shape for a longer period of time.

    Serving suggestions

    • Here are some great ways in which you can enjoy this mascarpone whipped cream frosting:
      1. Cakes: Spread the frosting as a filling and as a topping for your favorite cakes, such as vanilla cake, chocolate cake, strawberry shortcake, or red velvet, for a deliciously creamy and tangy twist.
      1. Cupcakes: Top your chocolate cupcakes with a dollop of the frosting for a decadent and luxurious treat.
      2. Pies: Use the frosting as a topping for your favorite pies, such as pumpkin, apple, or pecan, for a creamy and indulgent finish.
      3. Berries: Serve the frosting with fresh berries, such as strawberries, raspberries, or blueberries, for a light and refreshing dessert.
      4. Crepes: Use the frosting as a filling for sweet crepes, along with fresh fruit or chocolate chips.
      5. Waffles or pancakes: Spread the frosting on top of warm waffles or pancakes for a sweet and tangy breakfast or brunch treat.
      6. Fruit dips: Serve the frosting as a dip for fruit, such as apple slices, pear slices, or grapes, for a sweet and creamy snack.
      7. Cheesecake: Use the frosting as a topping for cheesecake, or mix it into the cheesecake batter for a creamy and tangy twist on the classic dessert.

    Flavor variations

    • The recipe I have on this page is a vanilla flavored mascarpone whipped cream frosting. Instead of vanilla extract, you can also use vanilla bean paste. Or you can use other flavors to enjoy this whipped frosting. Here are some ideas:
      1. Chocolate: Add 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder to the frosting to make a decadent chocolate version of the mascarpone whipped cream frosting. To avoid cocoa powder lumps in your chocolate frosting, sift it into the creamed mascarpone cheese before adding the sugar and vanilla extract.
      2. Lemon: Add 1 teaspoon of grated lemon zest for a bright and tangy flavor that pairs well with fruit desserts.
      3. Cinnamon: Add one eighth teaspoon of ground cinnamon to the frosting for a warm and spicy flavor that's perfect for fall desserts. Add the powder to the cheese before adding the sugar.
      4. Coffee: Add 1 teaspoon of instant espresso powder to the frosting for a rich and bold coffee flavor that pairs well with chocolate desserts.
      5. Almond: replace the vanilla extract with almond extract for a nutty and delicious flavor

How long will the frosting last and what is the best way to store it?

    • The frosting can last for a good 3 to 4 days, provided it is refrigerated.
    • It is at its best when used immediately as it is at its best pipeable texture immediately after whipping. You can then refrigerate your dessert and the frosting will remain as it is piped.
    • If you wish to store in the fridge before piping, it will loose some of its stiffness. You might have to rewhip it before using.
