This baking shopping list is perfect for home bakers. It comes in very handy and helps you organize your ingredients and supplies by identifying current stock of your supplies and listing out the quantities required to be replenished.
It is a great way to avoid situations where you run out of ingredients halfway through a baking or decorating project and helps you keep track of all our purchases.
When I was running my baking and decorating business, I came up with a baking ingredients and baking shopping list to help ensure all my supplies were in order before I embarked on a decorating project.
The list is basically an inventory shopping list that I use to check my stock at home and identify supplies that need to be replenished or newly purchased (for example a new cake tool for a new design I was going to decorate).
❤️Why you will love this list
- It will ensure you have sufficient stock of ingredients and all the necessary tools before starting a cake baking and decorating project.
- It is very organized and easy to implement.
- It is an effective way to manage your business and keep track of your purchases.
If you are into home baking and need good and reliable cake recipes, check out my never fail butter pound cake, chocolate pound cake, marble pound cake, orange cake and coffee flavored cake. These were my best sellers.

How to Create an Effective Shopping List
The first part of the list focuses on common baking ingredients and supplies. This includes standard cake ingredients such as sugar, flour, butter, and eggs and common supplies like cake boards, candles and cake boxes.
The second part lists all the tools and supplies that are specific to a particular cake design. For example, if you are going to make a wedding cake with damask design and gum paste hydrangeas, the list would include additional supplies such as gum paste, floral wire, floral tape, hydrangea petal cutters and damask stencil (if you do not already own these), etc.
Let's look at an example. Assuming you have to make the following castle birthday cake in 2 weeks' time and the customer's choice of cake is vanilla butter pound cake with vanilla buttercream filling.
Cake and frosting ingredients list:
After designing and deciding on the cake size, you need to list out all the cake and frosting ingredients needed. Example as follows:
Cake Ingredients |
Quantity Required |
Quantity in Stock |
Quantity to be purchased |
Butter Granulated sugar Self raising flour Salt Baking Powder Eggs Milk Vanilla extract |
900gm 900gm 900gm a pinch approx 2tsp 15 15tbsp 2.5tsp |
500gm 400gm 100gm approx 500g approx 100g 25 1 carton 2 bottles |
2kg 2kg 2kg - - 10 - - |
The first and second columns are the list of ingredients and quantity you need for the project. The third column is the quantity of stock you have at home while the last column (which is highlighted) is the quantity you need to purchase.
If you notice the list above, I have indicated the quantity of butter, sugar and flour to be purchased to be more than what is required. This is because these are common ingredients and you can stock them up slightly more than required for any last minute orders or for contingency.
Next, add the frosting ingredients. For this cake, I estimate about 3 batches of buttercream icing recipe:
Frosting Ingredients |
Quantity Required |
Quantity in Stock |
Quantity to be purchased |
Butter Powdered sugar Vanilla extract |
360g 360g 1.5tsp |
- 500g 2 bottles |
1kg 1kg - |
Again, you can indicate to purchase slightly more butter and powdered sugar than required as you can use them for other future orders.
Do note that for certain common ingredients like butter, where you will be using it for the cake as well as the frosting, once you have indicated the quantity you have at home under the cake ingredients list, remember to indicate the current stock in the frosting list as zero or nil. In the example above, since the available stock is only 500gm and it has been taken that into account in the cake ingredients list, reflect the quantity in stock for the buttercream icing as nil.
Common essentials list:
The next items to go into the list are common supplies. These are items that are generally required for all orders, so this listing will be fairly fixed. The only changes would be to the color variants and sizes.

Specific tools and supplies list:
The last items to go into the shopping list are specific tools or supplies for a particular cake design. For the castle cake above, the following are the specific items:
- M&M candies
- Marshmallows
- Silver luster dust for wordings on the cake
- Yellow and purple fondant for flowers (since there is very little of these colors on the cake, you can use white fondant and tint it with food coloring instead of buying pre-colored fondant).
- Flower plunger cutters
