    Sprinkles Cupcakes Decorating Ideas

    Published: Aug 29, 2020 · Modified: Aug 4, 2022 by Priya Maha

Sprinkles cupcakes. Well, ok, this is probably the easiest cupcake decorating technique around.  Who even needs a tutorial on how to make one? All you need is some buttercream and sprinkles and you can put the two together for instantly decorated cupcakes.

Well, that is if the decoration is all about dipping the top of cupcakes into sprinkles like this:

A cupcake in a silver casing, with white frosting and colorful sprinkles

The most effective way of doing this is by dipping the top of buttercream coated cupcakes into a bowl filled with colorful sprinkles and in doing that, turning the cupcakes around until the top is fully and evenly covered with sprinkles.

Having said that, my intention of writing this page is not just to share that one type of sprinkles decorated cupcakes. I have made a few other versions of these cupcakes and thought it would be good to put them all in one page.

    Sprinkles Cupcake Ideas

Below are a few cupcake designs I have made using just buttercream and sprinkles. The sprinkles are not just used to decorate the cupcakes, some of them are used as a filling and some as part of the cupcakes cake batter too!

    Funfetti Cupcakes

4 cupcakes on a plate, decorated with pink and purple swirl icing and colorful spinkles

These are mini cupcakes. I baked them in mini muffin cupcakes.

These are truly sprinkled inside and out. The cupcake recipe calls for the addition of sprinkles into the batter. The more colorful your sprinkles, the more colorful your baked cupcakes turn out to be.

Once they are baked, let them cool down. And then level the tops.

Spread a layer of buttercream onto each cupcake and top them with simply buttercream swirl pattern in colors of your choice.

And for the final touch, add more of the colorful, fun sugar sprinkles on top of each cupcake.

    Sprinkles Filled Cupcakes

A cupcake cut into half, with blue and gold sprinkles in the center. Cupcake is topped with white frosting

These are super fun cupcakes to make. They are literally filled with sprinkles and are simply awesome and super easy and super fast to make.

For these cupcakes, you start by baking them as you typically would for cupcakes. Once they are baked and have cooled down, you use a cupcake corer or a plain jam knife and cut out a hole in the centre of your cupcakes. You can cut the hole all the way to the bottom of the cupcakes or stop about three-quarters of the way down. It's up to you.

You then fill the hold with your choice of sprinkles until the hole is fully covered.

After that, you top the cupcakes with buttercream and decorate as you wish.

There surprise inside cupcake are a good choice for gender reveal parties and baby shower parties. You can leave the guests guessing the color inside the cupcakes until they are bitten into!

Serve the cupcakes and enjoy the reaction when people bite into one of these cupcakes!

    Funfetti Layered Cupcakes

A layered cupcake, cut into half, on a white plate with fork

These funfetti cupcakes require a bit more work but are nevertheless very easy to make. And they are best baked in tall muffin cases like the ones I have used here instead of the common pleated cupcake casings.

You bake the cupcakes like how you typically would. Once baked, the cupcakes are carefully removed from their casing. They are then sliced into 3 layers, and then stacked back in the same order, but with a layer of buttercream between each layer.

The cupcakes are then put back into new cupcake casings and the tops decorated with a generous swirl of buttercream. Top them with more sprinkles and the cupcakes are ready.

There you go. Hope you enjoyed reading this post as much as I enjoyed putting it together. Happy decorating !! 🙂
